In the life and death struggle of predator vs. prey, there have no doubt been many scenes just like this. The fierce predator preying on the young or infirm members of their herbivorous neighbors, Hoplophoneus and Subhyracodon are perfect examples of this complex relationship. For Hoplophoneus primaevus, one of the most successful saber-toothed ‘cats’, with its strong neck and large sabers, preying upon an infant rhinoceros may have been a scenario repeated over and over in the lost world of the Oligocene.
